Sha’ar Week 2 Recap

We’ve had a hot yet fantastic second week of camp!

During our Sha’ar time this week, we read the beloved story HaZachal HaRa’ev (הזחל הרעבThe Very Hungry Caterpillar) by Eric Carle. The campers learned that the zachal (זחל – caterpillar) was me’od ra’ev (מאוד רעב – very hungry). To satisfy his appetite, he ate a variety of foods, including a tapuach (תפוח – apple), agas (אגס – pear), shezif (שזיף – plum), tutim (תותים – strawberries), and tapuzim (תפוזים – oranges), just to name a few.

We painted our own zachalim (זחלים – caterpillars) using a Mikhchol (מִכְחוֹל– paintbrush), which gave us a wonderful opportunity to review our Hebrew color vocabulary. The chanichim (חניכים – campers) loved creating colorful designs and patterns, and they were especially excited to give their zachal (זחל) a partzuf (פרצוף – face).

We also reviewed the parts of the face, including einayim (עיניים – eyes), af (אף – nose), peh (פה – mouth), metzach (מצח – forehead), lashon (לשון – tongue), lechi (לחי – cheek), and many more Hebrew words. Just like the zachal counted how many foods he ate each day, the campers practiced counting in Hebrew throughout the week.

One of the week’s highlights was our partzuf (פרצוף) game! While blindfolded, the campers had to place different facial features onto a mifletzet (מפלצת – monster). This silly game had everyone laughing!

Although the hot weather required us to modify some of our activities, we still had an incredible week filled with learning, laughter, and Hebrew. We’re looking forward to getting back to our regular schedule next week.

We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Fourth of July!
