Chug Spotlight: The Ramah Garden

Today in the gardening chug, campers had the opportunity to connect with Jake and Jonny, our garden educators from Ifshin Gardens. Shorashim hanichim predicted what insects they expected to see once they entered the garden, such as butterflies and caterpillars. As hanichim walked along the mulch path, they stopped to touch the centers of emerging pink flowers and feel the silky hair of overgrown corn. When they reached the end of the path, Shorashimers gathered around a wheelbarrow and began their project of improving the mulch pathway by scooping buckets of mulch into the wheelbarrow. As campers filled the wheelbarrow with mulch, Jake explained that mulch is like the hat of a garden meaning that it is a critical protector of the garden because it keeps the soil underneath at a healthy temperature. In order to help the Hanichim relate, Jake compared mulch to hats, explaining that hats keep us from absorbing too much heat in direct sunlight.
