Sha’ar Week 3 Recap
We had a very special (meyuchad – מיוחד) week at camp!
Just like the caterpillar (zachal – זחל) from last week’s story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar (HaZachal HaRa’ev – הזחל הרעב), the campers prepared and enjoyed a delicious watermelon (avatiach – אבטיח) salad. They safely cut the watermelon using child-friendly knives (sakin – סכין) and placed the pieces into a bowl (ke’arah – קערה). We also discussed that the peel (klipah – קליפה) is not something we eat because it isn’t tasty (ta’im – טעים).
We also had a very special pe’ulah (activity – פעולה) this week. The campers created beautiful mezuzot (mezuzot – מזוזות) using colorful glass (zekhukhit – זכוכית). They learned that a mezuzah is placed on a door (delet – דלת) to help protect ones home and that it contains a very special scroll (klaf – קלף) with the Shema inside.
To end the week, we played a fun pool-themed game! The campers spun a wheel and dressed their counselor for the pool with whichever item the spinner landed on. The wheel included items such as a towel (magevet – מגבת), sunscreen (krem haganah – קרם הגנה), goggles (mishkefet – משקפת), a bag (tik – תיק), and many other Hebrew vocabulary words. The campers then decided where each item belonged by naming body parts in Hebrew, such as head (rosh – ראש), eyes (einayim – עיניים), foot (regel – רגל), and more.
In our Shorashim group, the campers made origami hats and learned the popular Israeli song “LaKova Sheli Shalosh Pinot” (“My Hat Has Three Corners”), complete with the traditional hand motions.
The chanichim had a wonderful week learning, creating, singing, and playing together. We are so proud of how much Hebrew they are using each day!
Shabbat Shalom!
